The exhibition features paintings alongside stories of resilience from 10 women from various parts of Brazil.
With the aim of raising public awareness and contributing to the debate on violence against women through art, Sesc Centro presents the exhibition “HerStory: Subverting Pain”, by visual artist Panmela Castro. Open to the public until March 28, 2025, the exhibition features paintings alongside stories of resilience from 10 women from various parts of Brazil.
The HerStory project began in 2019, inspired by messages and testimonials the artist received from dozens of women across Brazil. These were accounts of various forms of violence, but primarily stories of overcoming adversity. The exhibition, developed during a residency at Sesc Santa Rita, located in the historic center of Paraty, showcases stories such as that of Marta Leiro, a mother and resident of Calafate, a peripheral region of Salvador (BA). She recounts having endured a long-term abusive relationship. Now free from violence and emotional dependence, Marta shares her story as a way to inform and support other women facing similar challenges and hardships.
