Overview
Through the research that began with the exhibition “From the galleys to the galleries: representations and protagonisms of black people in the MNBA collection”, held in 2018, the exhibition aims to advance this protagonism of the representation of black people in the MNBA collection, highlighting their stories of struggle and resilience.
Pretagonisms** in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts brings together 105 works by 59 artists, 46 black and 13 white, who portray black people, to present the protagonism of the black artist in this collection, which is one of the main repositories of the country's artistic heritage. The oldest work dates from 1780-1800 and the most recent from 2023.
The exhibition's curatorial team - Amauri Dias, Ana Teles da Silva, Cláudia Rocha and Reginaldo Tobias de Oliveira, all permanent members of the museum wants to highlight the trajectories of struggle, resilience, transgression and heroism of these black people in a society that is still plagued by racism.
