Mulherio: Danielian Gallery
"Mulherio" (Womanly). Almost always, the word is used in a pejorative sense, associated with hysterics, shouting, nagging, gossip or "hotness". But what word related to women doesn't have this connotation? (...)Mulherio, in turn, is nothing more than "women" or "a large group of women". And what we are is what this newspaper will be. Yes, we are going to assume ourselves to be Mulherio and, together, we intend to recover the dignity, beauty and strength of women coming together to expose and debate their problems. In a serious and consistent way, but not in a grumpy, stern or dogmatic way" - Text published in the Year 1 issue number 0 of "Mulherio" in March/April 1981
Curated by Viviane Matesco, Marcus Lontra and Rafael Peixoto, the exhibition discusses the presence of female bodies in the work of 36 Brazilian artists, from various generations.
The body as a territory of political resistance, sexuality and feminist activism are articulated in sections which reflect on how the subject has been dealt with over time.
The title refers to the newspaper that circulated in Rio de Janeiro between 1981 and 1988, as an offshoot of studies on the status of women in Brazil, which in its 40 editions had important names in Brazilian thought as contributors, such as Lélia Gonzalez, Adélia Borges, Maria Rita Kehl, Ruth Cardoso, Carmen da Silva and Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda.
