Bienal das Amazônias: Belém Commercial Center
The first edition of the Bienal das Amazônias (Biennial of the Amazons) is conceived by the curatorial quartet composed of: artist, researcher and lecturer Flavya Mutran, Ph.D. in Visual Arts from the Institute of Arts of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul; researcher and curator, heiress Griot and shaman, narrator, singer, ancestral chronicler Keyna Eleison, also Artistic Co-director of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ); curator and art historian Vânia Leal, Education Curator at Arte Pará; and Guarani Nhandewa educator and curator Sandra Benites, also Adjunct Curator at São Paulo Museum of Art Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), making her the first indigenous curator to join a major art institution in Brazil.
The Bienal das Amazônias (Biennial of the Amazons) is a project developed by producers based in the Brazilian Northern state of Pará. Anchored in the city of Belém, the biennial involves and strives to stimulate the culture of the the Amazônias. It aims at conceiving artistic, educational and socio-environmental actions and at developing Pan-Amazonian audiences. The biennial culminates every two years with a large-scale event that highlights a diversity of artistic practices and interdisciplinary approaches. Hosted by cultural institutions and the public space in Belém and beyond, the biennial expands in virtual spaces. The bienal das Amazônias exists all year long with a touring exhibition and roaming educational programs.
